CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Kinda sucks that you caught me,” Derek said. “You guys completely destroyed the Moscow Mafia in D.C. That was almost their entire crew you caught. If I had gotten away, I would have owned the drug market here.”

“Too bad for you,” Matt said.

He shrugged. “I might not get out of jail, but I’ll get a nice cushy ride. I made sure to get some very incriminating evidence of some of my clients. They’ll pull strings for me, and I’ll get tv, good food and a girl once a week.”

“Sounds amazing,” Jessie said drily.

“Gotta make the best of things, right?” Derek said with a charming smile that held all of the warmth of a lizard’s grin.

“Sure,” Matt said. “Let’s make things even better by you telling me where you were two nights ago.”

“You mean when they hung Secretary Arquese? Yeah, that was crazy.”

Jessie and Matt glanced at each other. “Fascinating that you came right to that conclusion,” Jessie pointed out.

“Well, I can’t think of any other reason why you’d risk so much destruction just to capture little old me. You guys don’t look like drug cops.”

“So where were you?” Jessie asked.

“I was banging a housewife in Georgetown. They’re not as kinky as the girls in Chevy Chase, but they’re a lot less demanding.”

“Mr. Young,” Jessie said, “I advise you to start taking this seriously. People aren’t going to care about your incriminating evidence if the FBI decides to erase your hard drives, your phones, and anything else we can find of yours where you might store incriminating evidence.”

Derek’s smile faded. “All right,” he said, “You want to know where I was? I was banging a housewife in Georgetown. I wasn’t joking. I mean, I was about the Chevy Chase girls, they’re not really kinky, at least no more than anyone else, but yeah, I met a woman at a bar. Her husband’s a trucker, and he was out of town, so I offered to keep her warm. I doubt she’ll want to confirm that, but if you look at security footage from the Dragon Pub on Washington Avenue, you’ll see that I was there and that I left with a very attractive brunette in her early forties with legs for days and an unbelievable—”

“We got it,” Jessie said. “Matt, can you follow up on that.”

Jessie kept her expression neutral, but she really hoped his alibi would fall through. She didn’t love that she was rooting for anyone to be an assassin, but learning that they had once more wasted all this time would be a devastating blow.

While Matt headed outside to make the call, Jessie asked, “What did you use that Capitol Police badge for?”

“Use? I didn’t use it.”

Jessie was growing impatient with people being coy with her. Her frustration was compounded by the fact that Derek’s muted emotional response made it difficult for her to gain leverage she could use to coax information from him.

“You had the badge, yes?”

“Yeah, I had it. But I didn’t use it. I wouldn’t last ten seconds inside the Capitol.
